American Wrestling Association was formed in 1981 and has stayed wrestling from that moment. The current owner is the all time owner Wayne Simpson Sr. who recently announced he was to retire in January 2011 and let his son Phillip Simpson take over the company.

Originally the AWA was a wrestling promotion in a gym in New York, New York where local people who went to the gym would wrestle with others and win prizes (e.g. Championship Belts, Free Gym Sessions and occasionally a cash prize). In November 1980 Chester Franklin a promoter and affiliated with the NWA promotion saw an event and persuaded the NWA owner to invest in the company and get 25% of the profits. The NYGW (New York Gym Wrestling) changed its name in honour of its parent the NWA.
