The PWA World Tag Team Championship is the oldest division in the Premiere Wrestling Alliance. The title was created on June 2, 2006, and remained active until August 2008 when the GWF ceased operation. It returned for one show when the GWF returned in early 2009, but the title finally returned full-time in early 2010 when the GWF was born again as the PWA.
History[]
Origin[]
Main article: GWF World Tag Team Championship
The titles trace their lineage to the World Tag Team titles that were featured in the GWF. Although there were a few different tag team titles in GWF's history, the lineage is a combined history that traces back to the beginning of the company. The titles became prominent to PWA's history when XO Malone and Damian DeNiro held the titles, then later when The Reprobate and Damian DeNiro defended them on Sunday Brunch.
The belts are slightly crafted after the final GWF World Tag Team Championship design, when the titles were prominently featured on Brunch. The first Champions under the PWA banner, Frank Washington and Rayn, were crowned on March 2010 in a battle royal where the final two would become a makeshift tag team. The two had become entangled in a rivalry, despite being locked together as partners. They ultimately lost the titles when they battled Austin Virgo and Monty James to a stalemate double pinfall draw in May 2010. The titles were then held up and the top two contenders went at it to crown new champions. Jeff Jones soon debuted and aligned himself with Monty James, making him a more serious wrestler. The two won the titles together and held them for over four months.
On October 31, 2010, former enemies Chris Williams and Michael Smart became co-holders of the titles. The tandem held the titles together for roughly two months before the team imploded due do both men being unable to work with each other. Chris Williams attempted to vehemently defend the belts on his own on December 31, 2010... in a losing effort to Johnny Blaze and Osiris. This marked the first event since January 2010 that featured Chris Williams without a championship belt.
Rules[]
The rules set in play for the division were established at the same time as the World Heavyweight and World Interbrand division's rules were. The World Tag Team title division is unlike both of the other divisions, thus the rules are somewhat of a middle ground between those divisions.
- Matches are decided by either a three count pinfall, a submission (through verbal quitting or the tapping of a hand on a surface more than three times), or a wrestler being unable to answer a referee's call (TKO). Though competitors may be ejected if they are hurt beyond wrestling capability, their partner may continue the match if he is willing.
- Wrestlers must respect rope breaks, and if a wrestler does not break a submission hold following a rope break after the count of five, it may lead to stoppage and a subsequent referee's decision.
- Wrestlers have a lenient count of 15 seconds to return to the ring when the match has gone to the outside. Ignoring the count or taking advantage of it may also result in stoppage and a subsequent a referee's decision.
- Constant interference by an illegal partner (in non-tornado matches) may result in stoppage, followed by a referee's decision.
- Both champions must be pinned, eliminated by submission, or knocked out, in order for the title to change hands. The champions must only defeat one challenger in order to successfully defend the title.
