From what has already been observed from its "hauntings" of the Darker Realms, the creature known as The Dark Requiem (or TDR, to which it is sometimes referred) is an ancient entity that seeks to bring humanity into a dark age for its own good. Its origins go at least as far back as classical Greece.
It seems to be known by some in the DWF, such as Viper and Undead Enigma; Gideon has referenced it directly. However, its affiliation with realms other than Darker Realms remains as yet unexplored.
DWF Promotion - The "Hauntings"
On September 18, 2007, this message appeared on the DWF RPG Board:
Crossing a wine-dark sea for a time within a time, I stood apart from others by reason of my bondings to mentality altered and shifted to eke divinity. If in this I was perfect, then is my wonder as yet incomplete. For I grasp myriad totality in all size and scope known, and in the fullness of time I have yet to behold every mystery our collected conceit can devise. ‘Til the day is upon us, I shall traverse Earth seeking to hold Man back from his ever-reaching ambitions, so that he may never realize the horrors, the real and else, experienced by one that was denied the relief of a civilized Dark Age. Such is my purpose, sincere in the darkness. And that tide always draws me in.
It was posted under the title "Reality has reached your fingertips," and was arranged around an empty space that was shaped into some sort of symbol. A few days later, this symbol was posted on the board in the form of a sketch against a blue background, and again a few days after that looking thicker and more defined. Both of those posts incorporated the use of the "Domine Jesu Christe" from Maurice Duruflé's Requiem. Finally, on October 7, an image of what has come to be recognized as the final version of this symbol was posted, looking made of stone and emitting a blue glow (see below). Shortly thereafter, the symbol appeared plastered all over the background of the board, and disappeared a day later; how The Dark Requiem achieved access to do this has not yet been explained.
A week later, a post appeared entitled "All things in sequence," which featured the text of the Dies irae, the sequence of the Requiem Mass. It was typed in alternating corresponding verses--that is, according to the pattern in which it would have been recited--and the symbol was inserted into the text before the beginning of the final, or "Lacrimosa," section of the sequence, signifying the end of the original poem (the "Lacrimosa" was added on when it became part of the Mass). A variety of Ts, Ds, and Rs were also written in boldface throughout the text. Highlighting the empty spaces revealed the hidden message "FACE THE MUSIC" written at the end or beginning of every line in the sequence.
In the days that followed, there were three consecutive posts, each featuring the symbol, a secondary image, exotic music, and titled with one of the saying the Seven Sages of Greek history. The first was titled "Gnothi seauton" ("Know thyself") and had a photograph of a blue hyacinth flower; the second was titled "Meden agan" ("Nothing too much") and had a photograph of a ruined staircase on a hill, later determined to be the Sacred Way to the Temple of Apollo at Delphi where the sayings of the Seven Sages were inscribed; the third was titled "Kairon gnothi" ("Know the right moment") and featured a cloaked figure with long hair and holding a bow, resembling depictions of the god Apollo, enveloped in a blue light. (It has been assumed that this is an image of The Dark Requiem.)
As the third anniversary of DWF's pay-per-view event Straight to the Grave approached, individual characters were sent messages--and, in some cases, multiple messages--on the RPG board, always featuring the symbol, the Dies irae Aeolian chant, and a Bible verse cited in the title. Highlighting revealed the above-cited message from September 18 and the Latin words "Ire ad capulum" ("Go to the grave") written over and over again. Also, an image of The Dark Requiem's name was, at one point, seen fading into the DWF banner at the top of the RPG board and the Battle Arena.
DWF - The Arrival
At Straight to the Grave 2007, The Dark Requiem made a debut of sorts, defeating Gideon in a House of Mirrors Match. It also appeared at the end of the evening after the conclusion of the Undisputed Championship Match, seemingly to challenge new champion Damien Death. The two met in a steel cage match at the next pay-per-view event, Christmas Carnage, where interference from Damien's valet Angelica prevented it from claiming the title.
Based on the entity's first interview after his arrival, it seems that its primary mission is the elimination or control of the supernatural forces, or at least those that flagrantly defy natural progression of humanity. Shortly thereafter, it appeared to challenge all comers to a "Mystic Gauntlet" match to be contested at the next pay-per-view event, Last Rites. The details of this match have not been announced, but it is thought to be a gauntlet-type match that features the use of magical power and abilities. Why an entity seeking the elimination of these forces would wish to have them on display is as yet unknown.
The symbol definitely incorporates the Christian image of the cross, which fits in with the entity's seeming obsession with the Requiem Mass. It also features an infinity symbol, or Mobius strip, below the crossbeam, which would seem to suggest its apparent timelessness, given its ancient origins and uncertain future. The meaning behind the diagonal bar is less clear, though some have suggested a connection to palm branches, or the Eastern patriarchal cross.

The poem deals with the contrast of Christ's divinity, as Son of God and God himself, and humility, being born in a stable on a cold earth and having animals as his first worshipers.

- The phrase "face the music"--which means to accept the consequences of one's actions--is said to have its origin in the military, arising from the difficulty of training army horses to keep still while the regiment band was playing. Another possible origin comes from the tradition of a disgraced soldier being drummed out of his regiment. Still yet another possible origin refers to actors in musical theater overcoming stage fright.
