History
Edit
In November 2005, Jay Jefferson feeling that professional wrestling in a decline wanted to start a promotion that would bring professional wrestling back to the forefront the way many feel it should be. On November 30, 2005, Jay Jefferson would create his own professional wrestling promotion Universal Wrestling League. Along with Jay Jefferson many of the top stars around the professional wrestling world wanted to be a part of this new promotion. Universal Wrestling League began promoting it’s “TV Tapings” from the Knoxville Civic Coliseum TV Studio and later moved to it’s own building UWL Arena in January 2007.
Universal Wrestling League is essentially is a breakoff of King’s Road styles. Universal Wrestling League combines athletcic wrestling compatition and combines them with styles from the past. Universal Wrestling League is all about the sport of professional wrestling. You will never see the word “sports entertainment” in UWL.
Universal Wrestling League has went in another direction as far as promoting it’s events. Universal Wrestling League goes back to the old way of doing things and operates under the “Kayfabe era” style and that is promoting in one certain area. Universal Wrestling League promotes it’s events in Kentucky, Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Virginia. Universal Wrestling League also lays claim to the areas of West Virginia and Georgia.
In 2010 UWL branched out into new areas. UWL ran shows in Tokyo, Japan, Chicago, IL, New York City, New York, and Philadelphia, PA. These events were meet with great success and it eventually led to UWL's official "National Expansion" tour in mid-2011 - where UWL has held shows in California, the Midwest and Texas. There are also talks of a possible United Kingdom show in the later part of the year.
